What is a Gallon Medical Waste Container?
A gallon medical waste container is a rigid, leak-resistant container that is designed to store regulated medical waste safely until it’s picked up for disposal.
The containers are ideal for:

Blood/Body Fluid Contaminated Gauze and Dressings
Non-sharp infectious waste
The rigid design prevents leaks, protects staff from accidental exposure, and allows waste to be transported safely.
What is a Red Bag?
A red bag is a biohazard bag used to collect soft regulated medical waste. Waste placed in red biohazard bags includes:
Gloves
Gowns
Gauze
Surgical Drapes
Other soft materials contaminated with blood or potentially infectious materials.
OSHA allows red bags to serve as the biohazard identification, instead of using an additional biohazard label. However, the red bag itself does not replace an approved medical waste container for storage or transportation.
Do You Need Both?
Yes.
A red bag should be placed inside a rigid medical waste container. The red bag collects the waste, while the outer container provides the leak resistance and structural protection needed for safe handling, storage, and transportation.
